Summer Safety
Good morning. This is Dr. Joe Cincotta. The rumble of the lawnmower or the buzz of the lawn trimmer – both of these are common sounds of summer. And what exactly do they share in common that has to do with health care? Both of these and many other power tools share the fact that they can pose a danger to our sight and to our hearing. The impact can be sudden or it can be gradual, but the damage in either case can be severe. Years ago we did not appreciate these hazards. As a result we are experiencing problems, particularly with hearing loss, among many who were exposed to these dangers. However, today we understand the hazards much better and have the tools to prevent injury. Whenever operating equipment that generates loud noise or that can cause flying debris, we each need to take safety precautions to prevent injury. Safety glasses and hearing protection equipment is available and is not expensive. Don’t take the chance of losing your sense of hearing or of sight. The damage caused by an injury may not be reversible or treatable. Make sure that your children use this equipment if they are responsible for these chores. Take the time to be safe. Thank you.
